Universal Design and Assistive Technology

Universal Design is a concept that – in a perfect world – would enable those students with a disability to enter a room and immediately have EQUAL ACCESS to any and all information. With Universal Design, assistive technology can be used so that class lessons can be easily completed by everyone including those individuals with disabilities who use assistive technology.

The following adaptations are everyday examples of Universal Design: sliding automatic doors, large restroom doorways and stalls, adjustable tables, sidewalk curve cuts, texting, motion lights, lever handles, and e-books. Each of these examples makes everyone's life easier, not just someone with a disability.

• Assistive Technology for Hard of Hearing and Deaf

For people who are hard of hearing or deaf, a Sorenson service uses remote interpreters via a videophone. Videophones are free with the Sorenson service. Individuals may be in one location, and the interpreter may be in another state. Some schools have CART reporting available to Hard of Hearing and Deaf students. The CART reporter sits outside a class and listens through headphones to make an exact transcript of the lecture just like a court reporter. FM systems are also available for individuals who have hearing impairments. FM systems will amplify the sound from room to room. One person wears a small device with a transmitter, and the other person wears a receiver. The person with the receiver can hear what the other person is saying as if they are next to each other. Assistive Technology like FM systems should be available to anyone who visits a museum or enjoys a performance at an auditorium or movie theater.

• Braille / Tactile Diagrams

For someone who is blind, Braille technology is available in personal computers called PacMates that allow individuals to take their own notes using a Braille keypad. Tactile diagrams for science are also available for human anatomy models, cross-sections of the head, brain, nose, mouth, throat, respiratory tract, heart, digestive system, etc. Tactile maps are also available for anyone taking a geography class or studying the globe. Textbooks and tests in school can be produced in Braille for anyone requesting such services.

• E-Text

E-text is now available through many textbook and non-academic publications. Students who have disabilities may qualify for free copies of their textbooks from Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic. The University of Virginia also has thousands of e-books available to students. Kent State University has a non-commercial repository for e-book research, and Project Gutenberg has many e-books that are free of charge. Google has over 500,000 e-books that are free access. Most publishers want a "proof of purchase" for college textbooks before providing an e-text alternative version of the book. Kindle, The Nook, and Sony all have electronic readers for thousands of books, but interested individuals should also check for text-to-speech software that will allow them to listen to the book as well as read it.

• Physical Disabilities / Wheelchair Users

Wheelchair technology and add on systems are available for recreational activities like bowling and soccer. Paralympic athletes compete in international paralympic sporting events. In addition, specialized wheelchair carts with balloon tires are an option for riding over sandy beaches. For those people with limited upper body movement, computer access can be achieved using large trackballs, a foot mouse, sip and puff devices, and a head controlled mouse. Electric eyes can be provided that allow computer access and control through limited head movement and even eye blinks.

• Screen Magnifiers

Personal computers all have accessibility options including a zoom feature for someone with low vision. You can find access on the Control Panel feature of your PC. Zoom Text enlarges print for someone with low vision, and Zoom Text with speech also includes a screen reader. Products from Kurzweil and Freedom Scientific also provide screen readers and magnifiers. Home magnifiers are not only good for students, but the technology will help those who do fine work with their hands. Their hands can be magnified onto a monitor so that people can see their knitting, writing, or small detail repairs. Camera technology also makes life more accessible to individuals with low vision. There are a variety of products that enlarge text for someone with low vision that can be used on a desk top, are portable, or can be worn on the head for someone with mobility disabilities. For example, Flipper uses a camera to project information from the classroom board onto a personal computer. Jordy is a product worn on the head. Small pocket electronic magnifiers are helpful when trying to read small print during shopping because the user can push a button and freeze the image for easier access to the enlarged print. These products are available at low vision websites. In addition, you can get a microscope that is digital. The user hooks it through a computer with special software. The computer is then attached to a projector, and it enlarges the slide onto a wall or table for all to view at once. Math calculators are available that use an overhead to project onto the wall.

• Speech-to-Text

Someone who has low vision or hand movement restrictions can use a speech-to-text product like Dragon Naturally Speaking, one of Nuance voice control products. Nuance voice Controls will allow users to use voice commands to dictate emails to Blackberry, to add appointments, and to search the web. Sony ICD-SX46 Digital Voice Recorder can be used with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Software. Tablet PCs have a sensitive screen designed to interact with a complementary pen. You can use the pen directly on the screen like a mouse to select, drag, and open files and can be used in place of a keyboard to handwrite notes. Tablet PCs should also have speech-to-text technology. Nexus 1 Smartphone has a speech-to-text feature as well.

• Text-to-Speech

Screen readers are also available for free or purchase, depending upon the product. ReadPlease is a free screen reader for home use that reads text that has been cut and pasted to the screen reader on a computer. Students who are blind can use JAWS to listen to everything on their computer. Zoom Text and Magic also have text readers built into their software. Electronic pens are available also that can read notes aloud, scan and store text, transfer information to PDAs, Smartphones, and Personal Computers. Some of these pens can also translate English in other languages. The Pulse, Smartpen by Live Scribe lets the user record notes and then replay the written words by tapping on the notes. Notes can be saved to the computer and shared as Flash videos, PDF files, or audio files.

Regardless of the disability you are facing, today's technology will aid you through you day-to-day challenges.

Type 2 Diabetes – How Diabetics Can Boost Their Metabolism, Part 1

Having an efficient running metabolism is important for everyone. For people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, this is even more essential. But what exactly is a metabolic rate? This reflects to the amount of calories the body requires in order to perform its various functions. This rate can vary from person to person. Age can even affect this rate. It's important to have a "good" metabolism because it means your body is using energy more efficiently.

So, what is the correct and safe way to maximize your metabolism? There are actually quite a few actions you can take:

1. Start your day with breakfast. Just like you have heard for most of your life, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why? Because it sets up your metabolism rate for the rest of your day. The best breakfast should be a balanced one and include:

  • fiber,
  • protein that is low in fat, and
  • preferably some fruit.

Some people mistakenly believe they can help themselves lose weight by skipping breakfast. In their eyes, taking in fewer calories should promote weight loss, right? Well, not exactly. Not only does skipping breakfast cause your body to hold onto your stored fat even more tightly, but it causes unnecessary stress to your body and your blood sugar.

Denying food to a body that has already been fasting for at least the last 12 hours, is not only bad for you … it can be dangerous.

2. Plan your meals accordingly. Instead of eating three large meals, it's much more beneficial for your body and especially your blood sugar, to space your food out into five or six smaller meals.

Think of your body as a fireplace. When you load up a fireplace with stacks of wood, the fire burns extra brightly for a short while and then, suddenly, the fire dies down considerably until you add more fuel. Your body is designed in like fashion. A large meal will provide you with a boost of sudden energy but, once that boost is expired, your body will inevitably crash until you eat more food. Feeding your body smaller meals, spaced accordingly, will give it a constant supply of fuel with very little, if any, dips in energy.

One last thing about meals: never skip one. Many Type 2 diabetics tend to skip meals and snacks when they do not really feel hungry. Unfortunately, your hunger pains are not a reliable indication of the level of your blood sugar. Eat at the times your doctor or dietitian has recommended for you, whether you feel hungry or not. This will ensure a reasonably even level of blood sugar.

Great Gatsby’s Blueprint For Success

When I read biographies, autobiographies, or management articles and textbooks, I’m always impressed by one commonality among all successful people: they all set goals. I suppose all normal human beings do that every day; they have a mental plan of what they will accomplish during the day, or in the short run.

For the successful individuals, though, those goals they set for themselves are for the short run and for the long run. And they write those objectives down. This is the secret of success, for plans, goals, and objectives not committed to writing, often are nothing but dreams. A concrete written list will make you a doer, a mental list a wayward dreamer.

While many readers search for the Jay Gatsby’s magic hidden formula for riches and success, I’m sure they simply gloss over Gatsby’s schedule for self-improvement. But let’s not be mistaken; therein we find the roots of his success.

Here’s an exchange between Jay’s father and Nick Carraway, the narrator:

Jay’s father: “Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me I et like a hog once and I beat him for it.”

Nick: “He was reluctant to close the book, reading each item aloud and then looking eagerly at me. I think he rather expected me to copy down the list for my own use.”

Nick wasn’t about to copy the list down since he’s already a formed man, well connected, Yale-educated, and wealthy. Not a self-made man. For others, though, we can see that from an early age that Jay Gatsby had contracted with himself to become a success.

Gatsby’s schedule:

Rise from bed………………………………………….6.00……………..A.M.

Dumbell exercise and wall-scaling…………………6.15 – 6.30……….”

Study electricity, etc…………………………………7.15 – 8.15……….”

Work……………………………………………………8.30 – 4.30…….. P.M.

Baseball and sports………………………………….4.30 – 5.00……….”

Practice elocution, poise and how to attain it…..5.00 – 6.00……….”

Study needed inventions……………………………7.00 – 9.00……….”

What can we learn from this schedule? We learn that he’s an early riser; that he takes care of his body as well as his mind. What is poignant is that his vision of success included a persona or an image-a cultivated and well-poised image. As the story develops, we learn that he uses everything that he included in his schedule, from wall-scaling (maybe social climbing) to inventions, and baseball and sports.

His general resolves:

No wasting time at Shafters or [a name, indecipherable].

No more smoking or chewing.

Bath every other day.

Read one improving book or magazine per week.

Save $5.00 [crossed out] $3.00 per week.

Be better to parents.

Conclusion:

That Jay Gatsby set off on a quest to become rich, there’s no doubt. That he achieved wealth by cutting corners and dubious business deals with shady figures, there’s no doubt. The text is quite clear. The question that lingers is, would he have become successful without a written contract with himself?

No architect, builder, or contractor would set off to build a house without the blueprints of the house. Success needs a blueprint.

What Does the Future of Human Resources Look Like?

What was seen by numerous as one of the minimum energizing regions of an association is presently a standout amongst the most unique work environment, here are all the ways Human Resources is advancing.

From enlisting and terminating to empowering, engaging, and making experiences

It used to be that HR was only the place you went to get enlisted or terminated, yet those days are a distant memory. Today, HR is in charge of an extensive variety of worker exercises, a large portion of which base on empowering, connecting with, and enabling representatives. HR specialists are the real players in making worker encounter, which works with an association’s way of life and development and guarantees that representatives feel esteemed and bolstered along each progression of their work environment travel.

From the “police” of the association to the mentors, guides, and thought leaders

Rather than being the general population inside the association who implement the standards, HR delegates are presently thought of as guides and thought pioneers. Representatives used to be frightened of associating with HR workers for expect that they would get stuck in an unfortunate situation for accomplishing something incorrectly, yet today that attitude has moved towards review HR representatives as the general population to go to with proposals or input of how to enhance worker encounter and to pick up experiences into how to better your profession.

From keeping up business as usual to devastating status

HR was for some time thought of the office that kept the association murmuring along and that was impervious to change. On the off chance that you needed to take a stab at something new, make another program, or change your work routine, it would likely get held up in HR. Presently, be that as it may, HR is regularly in charge of destroying existing conditions to keep the association advancing. Rather than keeping things down, HR is the main thrust in building a firm workplace where representatives are glad and development can happen.

From not mechanically progressed to depending intensely on technology

The new HR grasps innovation to extend its part. Utilizing new instruments like enormous information and investigation, HR can better comprehend workers and settle on more key choices, instead of the old part of utilizing feeling and custom to decide. Interior information is accessible on pretty much everything, from how workers are performing to how regularly they visit certain territories of the workplace. HR agents utilize this information to discover drifts and make the most ideal technique and worker condition.

From not characterizing methodology to molding and driving strategy

It used to be that HR simply did as it was told and didn’t have much effect in the general methodology of the association. Today, HR workers help shape and lead technique, particularly as associations understand the effect representative experience can have on development and income. Satisfied and upbeat workers assume an immense part in the general achievement of an association, which implies HR now helps shape and lead the general technique.

From no seat at the table to a key seat at the table

Today, HR is advancing into a more focal part in the association where it has a key seat at the basic leadership table. Numerous C-level administrators originate from HR foundations and work straightforwardly with the office to ensure its needs are met. HR is more required than any time in recent memory with different divisions and frequently has its hands in numerous bushels through the organization.

From finance, remuneration, and advantages to worker experience

HR now does considerably more than simply work through finance and remuneration. Rather than concentrating on the fundamental needs of representatives, it centers around building an incredible ordeal where representatives need to go to the workplace and do their best work. With an incredible corporate culture, representatives appear to work for something beyond the paycheck, which implies HR likewise needs to deal with something other than finance.

From cost focus to benefit empowering center

By and large, the adjustment in HR’s part inside an association is because of administrators understand its benefit making potential. The old HR was regularly thought to be a cost focus, however by driving methodology and representative experience, the new HR gives the chance to make benefits and development. This has helped the HR division get a bigger spending plan since officials can see that putting resources into HR prompts more grounded representatives, a superior work environment experience, and frequently to higher benefits.

From an unmistakably characterized workforce to a dynamic and changing workforce

The workforce is changing ideal nearby HR, and the office must be prepared to meet those progressions. As the workforce changes, so too does HR’s way to deal with representative experience. More representatives are additionally working in HR to pick up encounter they can use in different zones, which implies the division is continually getting new perspectives, which it can use to make a more firm workplace.

From concentrating on worker contributions to concentrating on representative outputs

As HR advances, it is having more association with representatives and assuming a bigger part in the everyday exercises and obligations of laborers. Rather than concentrating on representative information sources and what it takes to take care of business, HR today is more centered around worker yields and how it can urge workers to do their most ideal work.

From treating workers like “assets” to treating representatives like water and air

Workers are currently seen as HR less as assets and more as essential parts of the association that they can’t survive without. It used to be that without representatives, HR wouldn’t have anybody to contract or terminate – workers were essentially things HR expected to carry out its activity. Presently, representatives are viewed as more essential – they are what drives everything HR does, and they assume a colossal part in the office’s prosperity. What HR does now relies upon what workers need and is custom fitted to their necessities.

From execution evaluations to ongoing acknowledgment and criticism with worker registration

HR is presently more engaged with the ordinary worker encounter than any time in recent memory. Quite a bit of this originates from continuous worker input with consistent registration rather than the old method for yearly execution audits. With more material criticism, HR plans to make a discourse with workers where they feel great hearing approaches to enhance and are available to influencing recommendations of their to possess.

From filling holes in employments to opening human potential

As a rule, HR is presently centered around ensuring workers get the expert advancement aptitudes they have to better their vocations. Rather than basically connecting representatives into positions to the association, HR works with individuals to locate their best abilities, open and create gifts that may be beneath the surface, and shape a situation in the association that meets their aptitudes and interests.

From a “one size fits all” model over the association to “one size breaks all” approach

The advancing HR division never again applies a one-measure fits-all answer for the association and rather utilizes a one-estimate breaks-all approach. HR now understands that every division and worker is unique and that an alternate approach should be taken to address singular issues. This is frequently executed by investing energy with singular representatives and divisions to discover how HR can best help them and drive their procedures.

From siloed from lines of business to working nearly to comprehend business needs

HR used to work in its own side of the workplace without much collaboration with different offices. The outcome was regularly a siloed association loaded with formality if different offices at any point needed to work together with HR. As things advance, HR has started working intimately with different divisions to best address their issues. There is regularly a considerable measure of cover amongst HR and different offices, and open correspondence and great working connections make it less demanding to combine for extraordinary outcomes.

From multi-year venture plan and move outs to quick outline, usage, and iteration

The new approach helps HR rapidly plan and actualize new projects and thoughts and remain in front of working environment patterns. Innovation is changing things rapidly, and HR never again has the privilege to kick back and make impeccably defined plans. Rather, the office must act rapidly to place designs enthusiastically while they are as yet pertinent. The outcome is a lithe office that needs to remain nearby to representative notion and patterns to assemble a domain that mirrors the present needs of the association.

From human asset work titles to individuals, ability, and experience titles

Numerous organizations have moved from customary HR titles like Chief Human Resources Officer to Chief Experience Officer or Talent Manager. New titles demonstrate the extended extent of HR and how it is associated with numerous more regions of representative experience.

The Dangers of Belly Fat

Did you know that belly fat not only alters your physique, but it also poses a threat to your health? You should know that there is more to be learned about belly fat and it is far more dangerous than just affecting your self-esteem. If left unattended the bulge can be fatal. So let’s take a closer look at how fats detrimentally affect your health.

It is a fact that as we reach our thirties, our metabolism slows down. This is the reason why it is harder at this time to get rid of the fats or to tone down.

The Anatomy of Fat

Fats are not all that bad. They are in the body for the purpose of insulation. The fats that you accumulate during the summer season are there to keep you warm when winter comes and food is not that abundant.

This type of adipose tissues is what you call subcutaneous fats. They are those that are found underneath the skin and above the abdominal muscles. But there is also another kind of fat, and it is the one that grows around your internal organs. These are what you call visceral fats. This is the more dangerous kind and can lead to a myriad of diseases. We can say that fats in general are dangerous, but even more so when they build up in your belly.

How Do Belly Fats Come to Be?

One of the common causes of belly fat is an uncontrolled diet. When you just eat without inhibition and you pair that with a sedentary lifestyle, this just increases your chances of forming a belly bulge.

Stress is also a factor in increasing belly size. When you are exposed to chronic stress, your body releases the hormone cortisol which retains fat and gather them up in the midsection.

The same thing happens when women reach menopause. When the amount of estrogen decreases, the fat distribution in the body is altered and mainly focuses on the belly portion.

Disadvantages of Belly Fat

As we have mentioned earlier, visceral fats are found hugging your internal organs. Since fats are also able to penetrate these organs, they are then absorbed into the bloodstream. In addition to that belly fat also brings with it harmful toxins or inflammatory substances that are continuously released.

Over time you start to develop hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, sleep problems, cancer, stroke and a list of other degenerative diseases. This is evidenced by increased levels of C-reactive proteins, which is the precursor to the various health issues mentioned.

To make it more understood; let’s take diabetes as an example. These nasty belly fats can release free fatty acids which affects your body’s ability to release insulin. With that effect you eventually develop diabetes due to the inability of the body to control the sugar.

The reason also why some individuals are more at risk for developing more visceral fats than others is that they maintain a diet that is high in carbohydrates. This means that there is just too much starch and sugars in what they are eating.

Because of its close proximity with other vital organs, belly fat can really create a serious threat and can easily also damage its neighboring organs.

How to Lose Belly Fat?

Since belly fat gives rise to the most common health problems you can protect yourself from the problem through proper diet with the right portions and regular exercise. Relieve yourself from anything that is causing you chronic stress and learn to adapt a positive and healthier lifestyle.

For women it should be that their waistlines should not measure 35 inches or more, and 40 inches or more for men. If so, this would be a cause for concern and would easily attract the various diseases we’ve mentioned earlier.

The dangers of belly fat is not only limited to concerns about one’s self-esteem, but more importantly it greatly affects physical health. So if you want to improve your condition make a conscious effort to make a lifestyle change. Through that you improve your looks and save your life!

Why Use a Personal Trainer and How Do You Choose the Best One?

Visit ten commercial gyms or fitness centres and ask them why you should use a Personal Trainer and you will get ten different answers, based around why you should use a Personal Trainer from their facility. The problem with the advice you are receiving from these professional sales people, is that the advice is driven by sales targets and is designed to help build the businesses of the resident Personal Trainers.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a Personal Trainer working out of a large commercial gym and I also want to build by business. Gaining access to gym members who have been sold on the virtues and values of personal training certainly makes that job so much easier. But, I would much rather have my clients decide to use a Personal Trainer (preferably me) for valid reasons and with a realistic view of what they can expect to receive in return for their hard-earned dollars.

Let’s start at the beginning; why is it best to workout with a Personal Trainer? Essentially, there are ten reasons why most people choose to engage a Personal Trainer and they are:

1. You are not seeing results. Many people will begin an exercise regime with a general goal in mind, usually weight loss, and work like crazy for weeks, months and even years without getting any discernible results. A good Personal Trainer will begin your journey with a comprehensive Pre-Exercise Screening questionnaire and will have an in depth discussion with you about your goals, motivation and previous exercise history. Only then, after gaining an understanding of where you currently are and where you want to get to, will they begin formulating an exercise and nutrition plan specifically for you. Included in the pre-exercise screening, will be body weight assessment, girth measurements and possibly even skinfold measurements taken to establish a baseline against which your future progress will be measure.

2. You don’t know where to start. No Personal Trainer worth spending your money on will assume that you have any prior knowledge of anatomy & physiology, nutrition or exercise science. The reason is that if we assume that every client is a blank canvas and develop the workouts based on the principles of sound technique and progression, every client has the opportunity to learn the safest, most effective way in which to build their strength, cardio vascular fitness and insure against unnecessary injuries. Most people who join gym don’t know how to exercise effectively or safely and there is no-one better to teach you how to do that than your Personal Trainer. A large number of people will download a templated workout from their favourite website or get advice from their “fit” friends. The problem with this approach is that you may not know how to use the equipment safely and the workout has not been tailored to suit your individual needs and/or limitations.

3. You are bored with the same old workouts. I know from personal experience that if you do not change your workout on a regular basis, or add interesting cross-training options into the mix, you become very bored with the workout and are less likely to even attempt to do it. Bang, there goes your motivation. A good Personal Trainer will be continually reviewing your progress, how your body is adapting to the exercise and, assessing your motivation. If any, or all, of these indicators show signs of plateauing or you are less motivated, he will change your routine and add some variety into your workout to keep it interesting and to continually challenge your body.

4. You need to be challenged. If you are like the majority of the exercising population, there will be days when you simply don’t feel like pushing yourself to your limits or, you just feel like slacking off. A Personal Trainer will not allow you to bring out the BS excuses to not workout. He will push you to complete that last two reps and encourage you through the set when the weight seems far too heavy. He will be your conscience, your mentor and your cheer squad, but he will not be your Mother.

5. You want to learn how to exercise on your own. Even if you want to exercise on your own, it is a great idea to engage a Personal Trainer for a few sessions to learn the right way to exercise. This is especially true if you want to learn about the muscles in your body, how to target those muscles and how to complete the exercises with good technique. Just a few sessions can teach you about your body, how it works and what you can do the get the best out of it through exercise.

6. You need accountability and motivation. Personal Trainers come with built-in motivation. You are investing both money and time in your health and fitness and there is nothing like a standing appointment to get you off your butt and moving. A good Personal Trainer will also provide accountability; so if you don’t turn up for an appointment, they will be straight on to you to find out if you did the missed training in your own time. They will regularly quiz you on your eating and sleeping habits to make sure you are staying on track.

7. You have a specific illness, injury or condition. If you have specific conditions like, Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, arthritis or old injuries, working with a Personal Trainer, who can work with your Doctor, Physiotherapist or Chiropractor, can help you find a program that suits your particular circumstances, help heal injuries and, avoid further problems. Keep in mind that you want to find a trainer who has experience with your issues and make sure that trainer works closely with your doctor and/or physical therapist for the best experience.

8. You are training for a sport or event. If you’re training for a marathon, the football season or some other type of sport or event, an experienced Personal Trainer can help you decide what you need to do to stay strong without detracting from your other training. He can also help create a training program and map out a periodisation plan for the coming event. Just make sure he’s experienced in the sport you’re training for since not all trainers do sport-specific training.

9. You want supervision and support. Some people do know how to exercise for best results and do know how to exercise safely but still want to have a Personal Trainer around to supervise their workout and provide support (including spotting heavy weights) during the workout. The Personal Trainer then becomes more of a training partner.

10. You want to workout at home. Many people have a good collection of exercise equipment at home but aren’t sure how to use what they have or, lack the motivation and discipline to actually exercise. A Personal Trainer can show you exactly how to use what you have got and the knowledge that your Trainer will be arriving at a particular time in the specified day will help motivate you to do the work.

Now that you have some really compelling reasons why you should use a Personal Trainer, the next question is: How do you pick the best one?

I could be facetious and simply say, “pick me!” but there are some fundamental, and non-negotiable, criteria that you should insist on seeing. The first of these is an appropriate, recognise qualification in fitness or exercise science. As an absolute minimum, the Personal Trainer must have a Certificate III & IV in Fitness. If they have a Diploma in Fitness or Under Graduate Degree in Sports or Exercise Science, then so much the better.

Secondly, if they do not have additional qualifications, e.g. Certificate or Diploma level, in Nutrition or Dietetics, they should not be offering nutritional or dietary advice beyond the scope of the National Dietary Guidelines. If, on the other hand, they do have additional qualifications in Nutrition and/or Dietetics, they can help you analyse your diet and offer nutritional guidance and advice.

The third factor to consider is their specialisation. Every Personal Trainer has been educated to a level that will allow them to offer support and guidance to a broad range of people with a broad range of objectives and challenges. However, I have yet to meet a single Personal Trainer who does not have a specialisation or, a preference for a particular type of training. If you have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and your goal is to lose weight and control your condition, it would be pointless teaming up with a Personal Trainer whose specialisation or preference is for body building and competition. It would be equally pointless for an aspiring body builder to team up with a Trainer who specialises in post-pregnancy weight loss. The experience would be underwhelming and frustrating for both parties.

Finally, compatibility is a key factor in deciding who you should entrust with your health and fitness journey. You might have found the best Personal Trainer on the planet but if he has a huge ego and has difficulty relating to you, on your level, he is not the guy for you. Spend the time to sit down and have a chat, find out something about the Trainer’s background, their personal fitness journey and what they enjoy doing in the gym. If you find a kindred spirit who has all of the qualifications and a specialisation that fits your needs, they are the Trainer for you.

When you do find that perfect Personal Trainer, don’t make the mistake of putting dollars in the way of achieving your goals. The investment in the right Personal Trainer will be worth every cent. Let’s say you are asked to invest $50 per session twice every week to get the Trainer of your choice. In isolation, $100 can seem like quite a large amount of money but you need to put it into context; what is your life and long term health worth? If you eliminated all junk food, cigarettes and alcohol from your diet, how much would that save you each week? If you were able to stop taking the drugs that are currently keeping you healthy, how much would you save? The dollars should not be the determining factor.

It is very easy for me to state “I can get you into the best shape of your life” and in fact, many of my contemporaries do exactly that in their advertising, but what does that mean in the context of your life? I would much rather say: “I can help you find the strength of purpose and discipline to be fit and healthy for the rest of your life.” This is a reality that we can both commit to and make it happen. Only you can change your life; I can teach you how and help you achieve it.

Cholesterol Management: Cholesterol and Diabetes

LDL cholesterol is sometimes called "bad cholesterol"; HDL cholesterol is sometimes called "good cholesterol." LDL is what takes the cholesterol out into the bloodstream to distribute it to where it is needed in the body. HDL takes the excess cholesterol out of the bloodstream and returns it to the liver.

It is generally good to have higher HDL rates than LDL. Diabetes can affect the distribution of the lipoproteins. As such, diabetes can lead to a higher incidence of heart disease.

Diabetes affects cholesterol in certain ways: people with diabetes are likely to have LDL particles that are more damaging to the artery walls, because the cholesterol sticks to the artery walls. People with diabetes can have lower-than-normal HDL rates, which means that cholesterol is not removed from the blood efficiently. Diabetics can also have higher rates of triglycerides, another blood lipid (blood fat) that can cause complications.

Glucose latches on to lipoproteins, particularly LDL. Sugar-coated LDL stands in the bloodstream longer, and can lead to an increase in arterial plaque. Arterial plaque is a build-up on the artery walls. It leads to irregular blood flow, and in severe cases, it can block the artery entirely, causing a stroke. These blood clots, called a thrombus, can lead to thrombosis and other medical conditions. Some studies have shown that you can lower your arterial plaque by taking Vitamin K (potassium), which is found in fruits such as bananas.

Some people with diabetes have to work to control their cholesterol with their diet and exercise. Eating less fat (such as butter, margarine, and cooking oil) can help you lower your cholesterol. Eating more fruit is another way to combat high LDL cholesterol. Choose low-fat dairy options (try drinking skim instead of 2%, or using low-fat sour cream), and choose whole grain bread options. Exercising for 30 minutes a day is an important part in controlling both your cholesterol and your diabetes. Limit your servings of meat, fish, and poultry. Animal products are the only ones that contain potentially amounts of cholesterol.

As you have probably noticed, the lifestyle changes involved in managing cholesterol are very similar to the techniques for managing diabetes. Rather than going on cholesterol-reducing drugs, alter your lifestyle first. You will be healthier and happier overall if you manage your cholesterol naturally. Very few people need cholesterol-lowering drugs, except those with certain predispositions and genetic conditions. If you do choose to use drugs, be sure that your doctor and pharmacist know what diabetes medications, and other medications, that you take.

Cholesterol, like diabetes, can be managed by living a healthy lifestyle. Eat properly, exercise regularly, and look after yourself, and you will most likely never have a problem with your cholesterol levels.

Blogging – The Latest Internet Craze

There was a time not too long ago that blogging was heard of and known by on a few internet surfers and nerds. Today, however, blogging is used by millions and has proven quite successful for internet marketing and promoting your services or product. For almost any interest you may have, you’ll be able to find a place to blog. For the few that actually are unfamiliar with blogging, blogging is very similar to writing in a journal, diary or chat room. The internet is filled with blogging sites. Some are diverse and generic and cover a number of topics while others cater more to a specific topic or niche.  Blogging has become a very popular site for online business owners trying to promote their website or product, particularly when you develop a sort of relationship with other bloggers with similar interests.

Here’s an example of how blogging can help you earn income from your business. You have a website dedicated to quality dog products. You find a few sites made up of dog owners and dog trainers and begin blogging on their post. You develop a friendly rapport with the owner of the site, who allows you to post a link to your website. All the people that are viewing the blogging site now have access to your website. This is the kind of exposure you need to get your traffic flow built up. You may also find a blog owner that offers the same type of product as you. Often two owners will post each other’s links on their pages to get more traffic to their own site. You may also choose to start your own blog and just keep adding to it until, eventually; you get more people blogging as well. Remember, good business is all about traffic flow, which comes from good advertising.

Woman in 69 Position – The Ultimate Oral Sex Position

The name of the 69 position derives from the physical arrangement of the male and female bodies to give simultaneous oral pleasure to each other. In the next few paragraphs you will learn how to master the woman in 69 position to maximize the derived sexual stimulation. It is certainly worth perfecting; mastery of the 69 position is able to give the most sexual stimulus during oral sex. There are, in fact, three types of 69 position but first we must prepare for the act.

Preparation For The 69 Position

In preparation for the woman in 69 position both man and woman should strip naked and bath or shower. It would be a distasteful experience to try oral sex without first washing. This can be incorporated into the foreplay.

The Side-By-Side 69 Position

Lie beside your partner in opposite directions on the bed; so their genitals and close to your face and vice versa. Turn on to your side, facing your partner, and part your thighs. Hold your partner about the hips and begin oral sex.

The Above-And-Below 69 Position

Your partner will be lying on their back. Straddle them across the chest while facing towards their feet. Move your genitals into a position above their face and angle yourself down so that their genital are also before your face. Commence giving oral sex.

The Standing 69 Position

It is usually the man who stands, since he is generally taller and more physically able. He holds the woman by the feet or calves while she takes a firm hold of his ankles or calves. Once the genitals of the woman are close to the mouth of the man, the genitals of the man should also be in position so she easily perform fellatio on him.

Like all sexual positions, the 69 position requires practice to perfect. It is, however, more than worth it. The woman in 69 position is able to provide the most sexual stimulus for acts of oral sex; it feels much better to be receiving oral sex whilst also performing. Just remember to practice good hygiene and incorporate your initial ablutions into your foreplay.

Investing in the Mass Marketing of Diabetes Reversal

The problem has not been reversing diabetes. Since 1999, with the breakthrough ‘Edmonton Protocol,’ reversal of diabetes has been clinically proven to work. More than 80 percent of diabetics undergoing this transplant surgery were ‘insulin free,’ after three years. But, the hurdle which has eluded researchers thus far is the ability to provide broad commercial use of these transplant surgeries for the general population. New research may offer hope for a greater number of the 21 million diagnosed and potential diabetic sufferers.

Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. More than 200,000 die every year because of complications from diabetes. It is the leading cause of blindness and causes 40 percent of kidney failures. The small narrow organ behind your stomach, called the pancreas, breaks down nutrients by releasing enzymes into your small intestine. The pancreas releases insulin, which moves glucose into your cells to produce energy. In a Type 1 diabetic, the pancreas can no longer produce insulin, and the glucose stagnates in your bloodstream instead of being moved into your body cells to produce energy. About 10 percent of all diabetic cases, known as Type 1 diabetics, are at the highest risk for heart disease, strokes, limb amputations and other vascular disease-related complications. A Type 1 diabetic must inject insulin for his or her entire life.

Before the Edmonton Protocol was developed at the University of Alberta, only eight percent of the 267 pancreatic islet cell transplant patients were able to remain free of insulin injections after a year. In Edmonton, Canadian surgeons developed a technique implanting healthy human islet cells into Type 1 diabetic patients who could then produce their own insulin. The ten-fold success rate increase in success became the industry standard for reversing diabetes, but there was a serious problem with this procedure. Transplantations were limited to high-risk Type 1 diabetics because of supply problems.

In this case, the broad divergence between the number of diabetics – about 80,000 per million, and the number of human donors – roughly 22 per million, made widespread commercialization of the Edmonton Protocol impossible. There simply aren’t enough human donors available. Not by a long shot – at most, there may be less than 6,000 pancreatic donors compared to nearly 2 million Americans suffering from Type 1 diabetes. During a typical transplant, about one million islets would be required for a successful surgery in the average person. To obtain sufficient islets cells to perform this transplant procedure, at least two pancreatic organs are needed. Additional organs could be required to help the patient’s insulin production reach the desired level.

University of Minnesota Reverses Diabetes in Monkeys

How are researchers remedying the supply shortage? Recent research demonstrates top scientists have turned to xenotransplantation to increase the number of islet cell donors. Another milestone took place at the University of Minnesota this past February when researchers at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation islet transplant centers reversed diabetes in monkeys by transplanting islet cells from pigs. Researchers said pig organs are similar to those of humans. Pancreatic organs from pigs are more readily available to help save the life of a Type 1 diabetic. More than 60 million pigs were traded on the Chicago pork belly market last year, offering an abundance of pig islet cells for a much larger number of diabetic transplant surgeries.

The novelty of the Minnesota research included a cocktail of immunosuppressive drugs which prevented the body’s immune system from rejecting the cross-species transplant of the pig’s islet cells. In the control group monkeys, which were not given immunosuppressive drugs, rejected the pig islets after a few days. While the drug mixture helped the lab monkeys survive much longer – a median of more than 140 days, the side effects of those drugs eventually caused their demise. Human subjects may demand a longer survival level after a transplant surgery.

We talked to Dr. David White, Novartis/Stiller Professor of Xenotransplantation at the University of Western Ontario, about the problem of organ rejection and the use of immunosuppressive drugs. “When it comes to animal-to human transplants, the amount of immunosuppressive drugs that you have to give to stop this rejection is dangerous to the patient,” the renowned immunologist told us. “We’ve been looking for a way to transplant these islets without having to give these dangerous drugs.” While at Cambridge University in the 1970s, Dr. White helped research and develop the immunosuppressive drug Cyclosporin A in conjunction with Professor Sir Roy Calne. The drug minimized the risk of organ rejection after transplantation, allowing new developments in transplantation procedures. Dr. White believes his current research may lead to a technique for performing the islet cell transplants without the use of immunosuppressive drugs.

Research Innovation Could Lead to

Widely Available Diabetes Reversal

This technique, which Dr. White believes may provide the final piece in the puzzle for insulin-dependent diabetics, is a refinement initially developed by Dr. Rafael, his former Cambridge University student. Valdes, who was featured in a five-part series on Canada’s CTV TV in 2003, developed a subcutaneous tube for inserting Sertoli cells and islet cells into Type 1 diabetics. The Sertoli cells interfere with the immune system’s rejection of the pig islet cells. Sertoli cells are found in the testicles and have, since 1939, been recognized as an ‘immunologically privileged site.’ In other words, surgeons can transplant into the testicles and not suffer organ rejection. By injecting Sertoli cells from pigs along with the pig islet cells, the body can accept the islet cells. The diabetic patient’s rejuvenated pancreas can then produce insulin for his or her human body, successfully reversing the effects of Type 1 diabetes.

For the past six years, the Cambridge University surgeon has used this technique at his clinic in Mexico City, transplanting 24 human patients suffering from Type 1 diabetes. In more than half the cases, Valdes was able to reverse diabetes without the use of immunosuppression drugs. He continues to perform this procedure as authorized by the Mexican health authorities. The combination of Sertoli cells and islet cells from pigs are compatible with the human body’s immune system, which eliminate the necessity of immunosuppression drugs to prevent the body’s rejection of the transplanted cells.

“We’re actually in the curious situation that we already have the clinical trials done, and now we’re working on the pre-clinical studies,” Dr. White told us. But this surgical procedure has not yet gotten FDA approval. “The critical issue is we’re going to have to demonstrate reversal of diabetes in monkeys,” White explained. “The question is how long the FDA will require us to reverse diabetes.” FDA guidelines state 90 days, but Dr. White believes they may require between 6 months to a year of proven diabetic reversal on monkeys before the U.S. government agency will permit human clinical trials.

White presented a recent research breakthrough at the World Transplant Congress in Boston last month. “Along with everybody else, we had been using Sertoli cells taken from neonatal pigs,” White told us. “We have discovered neonatal Sertoli cells are not nearly as effective as Sertoli cells taken from sexually mature adult pigs. We can demonstrate these are much better developed to fulfill their function of preventing rejection, and we have gotten good results with the adult Sertoli cells.” He continues to use the islet cells from neonatal pigs in his innovative research, as did the University of Minnesota with their significant advance in reversing diabetics in monkeys.

While rodent trials are ongoing as a prelude to primate experiments, Dr. White has turned to the financial markets to complete his research and commercialize this treatment option for Type 1 diabetics. On May 25th, the Toronto Venture Exchange approved the Pheromone Sciences (TSX: PHS) joint venture with Sertonex Inc. of London (Ontario) and Sertoli Technologies (Arizona) to develop a commercially viable treatment for Type 1 diabetes. Dr. White serves on the board of Pheromone, has been engaged as the principal researcher on this project and accepted the Chair of the company’s scientific advisory board.

Since then, the company has begun adding scientific and business advisors to bring the project forward to commercialization. Formerly the Assistant Dean of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Dr. Norman Wong joined the Pheromone scientific advisory board in mid July to assist in product development of the diabetes treatment. Wong has published numerous articles on diabetic research and has researched the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. Two weeks later, Dr. Jannette Dufour joined the scientific board. She had previously worked at the University of Alberta’s Clinical Islet Transplant Program (originators of the Edmonton Protocol for Type 1 diabetes). Dr. Dufour is presently also assistant professor at Texas Tech University.

It may be possible, after the company’s commercialization process advances, that the much larger universe of Type 2 diabetics – especially those who are insulin-dependent – could benefit from this xenotransplantation technique. This number, in the United States alone, could exceed 12 million diabetics. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control about 800,000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year.

About $10 million dollars are spent on health care for diabetics every hour of the day. “We are looking at three to four million recipients initially with the number growing,” said Dr. White of the xenotransplantation technique he is currently developing. As with many pioneering developments, further research, such as the work being conducted by Dr. White, builds upon the initial success of the Edmonton Protocol. In the near future, we may see a widely available treatment which can benefit a greater number of diabetics.

Herbal Remedies For Diabetes

Persons suffering from diabetes usually experience soaring stages of sugar in their blood when they encounter this condition. Their system is not able to fully make use of the insulin it generations. Insulin is the substance which plays the role of transforming sugars, starches and various kinds of food energy. This will result in elevated levels of glucose ramping up in their system. It usually results to sever harm to the organs in your body if it is not deal with. We have a lot of herbal remedies to apply to deal with diabetes.

The first herbal remedy which you should think of as a way to fix your diabetes problem is through the utilization of herbs which have the power to lower your glucose level. There is a herb referred to as salacia oblonga. It is one of the herbal remedies for people suffering from diabetes. What this herb does is to aid to normalize the increase of your blood glucose after you have eaten a diet. It has been in use by Indians for long due to the positive results it deliveries.

Based on the research by Dr. Andrew Weil, a report released during the 2005 publication of the journal of American Dietetic Society discovered that this herbal remedy substance processes the stages of blood sugar of people who took it and reduced insulin stages. It's essential for you to be aware that this research was not pointed at diabetes and there was not any partaker who had the disease. It is in your own best interest to talk this herbal remedy out with your medical practitioner before going ahead to use it.

I also discovered that a reliable source like that of University of Maryland medical center claims that the said herb has really shown the power to act as a herbal remedy for diabetes. You need to talk it out with your doctor to get the required dose for you to take.

Another herbal remedy which plays a crucible role is bitter melon. It has been in use for many years among traditional Chinese medicine users. It reduces the stages of glucose serum. Fenugreek seeds normalize the levels of glucose. Gymnema was examined as a supplement to conventional diabetes medicine and it seems to boost their result. It has a great influence on the urge to try out sugary diets. Cinnamon lowers the stages of blood sugar, glucose together with the quantity of fat and cholesterol which can be found in your blood. Ginseng also acts to lower the level of your blood sugar. I suggest you talk it out with your doctor before you try out any of the above named herbal remedies.

The last alternative which does not only contain herbal remedies, but other available methods for dealing with diabetes is to get the diabetes reversal report. It is a step by step manual which contains the methods to use for the reversal of your diabetes. See more about it at Diabetes Reversal Report Review

The Meaning of Deductible in Insurance

What does deductible mean in an insurance policy? It’s the amount of a claim you are responsible for, before the insurance company will start paying it’s share of costs.

In automobile insurance coverage, you may select a plan with a deductible of $1,000. This would mean that if you have a collision where repairing the damage would cost $5,000, the insurance company would pay $4,000, while you must pick up the rest.

If you had a minor accident with a scratch that would cost $500 to repair, the insurance company would not have to pay anything. You would have to pick up the repair costs yourself.

In health insurance, the deductible is one of three methods the policy can use to share costs. (The others are copay and coinsurance)

Health care costs add up over time rather than on a single incident, so you will usually find the deductible listed as “Calendar Year Deductible” (or CYD). When defined this way, it means your bills start from $0 on January 1 and accumulate through the end of that year.

It would be unfortunate to develop a major health problem and get to the hospital on New Year’s Eve. If you hadn’t met your deductible for the old year yet, you may end up with two deductibles to meet. One for services before midnight, and another for costs in the new calendar year.

You may find a policy that starts counting the deductible from the date your coverage begins and accumulates through the policy year instead of the calendar year, but this is rare.

Also uncommon is a plan that will let you roll over your deductible from the end of the previous year to help in case you do experience the New Year’s Eve scenario.

Sometimes you will find an item in a health policy where the deductible definition is “per admission” or “per occurrence”. The per admission deductible would mean a new deductible applies every time you are admitted to the hospital, while “per occurrence” would likely apply to each Emergency Room visit.

Usually, health insurance policies that offer office visits for a copay do allow you to use this reduced rate before you meet your Calendar Year Deductible.

The higher your deductible is, the lower the risk to the insurance company and the less you have to pay in premium costs for the coverage. On the other hand, lower deductibles mean higher premium costs to you.

So, which is better, a low or high deductible? If the annual premium savings is more than the difference between the deductibles, the higher deductible is the best best.

7 Reasons You Have Nothing in the Bank

You have a job, sometimes even a good one, but you're living paycheck to paycheck and you have nothing saved up. How did that happen?

You do not set goals

You will not get anywhere unless you set goals. This goes for your career, your life and, for sure, your money.

Set a goal to have x saved up in 12 months, y saved up in 5 years, and z in 10 years. Sure, life throws a curve ball at us from time to time, but you need to know what you should have saved up at each stage of your life, even if you have to play catch-up from time to time.

If you're 25, you should aim to be worth $ 1 million by 50 including your house. If you're 40 and still have nothing, aim to start by saving $ 500 a month (increasing by $ 100 a month every year) to be worth $ 1 million by 65.

You do not have a budget, or you have a budget but do not stick to it

Buddies may sound boring, but believe me it's much more boring not to have any money. Set a budget and stick to it. Your savings come first, then manage on the rest, whatever it takes.

You waste money

Any money you waste is gone forever. Cut out the cigarettes, the dinners out, the drinks at the bar, the brand names … It's much more important to be on track financially. Ask friends over for dinner instead of going out to the late over-priced restaurant, open a cheap bottle of wine at home instead of drinking at wine bars, learn to cook instead of ordering take-out, buy cheaper things, have a 6 month spending freeze, re-negotiate your mortgage, talk to your bank to eliminate or reduce fees, find free things to do on the weekends instead of spending hundreds of dollars.

You do not earn enough or you do not work hard enough

Even if you've cut your spending to the bare minimum, maybe you simply do not earn enough. Double-down on your job and try to get a promotion or two. Look around for something that pays better instead. Sometimes you have to move around to get ahead. Get that CV looking professional. Start a side gig to make some extra cash. If you're just working the minimum at your day job and then partying from 5 pm, you're never going to be financially secure.

You're in debt

If you're in debt at the bank or just paying the minimum on your credit cards, you're working for them, not yourself. The only debt you should have is your mortgage. Make a plan to pay everything else off, starting with the most expensive debt in terms of the interest rate and set some target dates. Try adding all your short-term debt to your mortgage and vow to yourself it will never happen again.

You're in the wrong group

Your friends spend money like there's no tomorrow and you try to keep up. Maybe they're making more than you are, or sometimes they also have debts that are dragging them down just like you. Do not be afraid to say no to the latest idea about how to waste money. Look for new friends by joining cheaper activities such as reading clubs, hiking groups, cooking classes, etc etc. You'll soon get in with a better crowd.

You live with the wrong person

Your partner is a spender and you're too afraid to put your foot down after so many years. But why let a spender take the money decisions? It makes no sense! Take control. Close the joint account and cancel those joint credit cards. OK, you did not fall in love with someone because of their spending habits, but come on! Are you going to work like a donkey for the rest of your life for nothing? Divorce is expensive, but many people say it saves them money in the long run so do not be scared to take some responsible decisions and put down some red lines.

Secret Empire #7 Review – Bound To Create Some Controversy

Secret Empire #7 is bound to create some controversy and make some waves. It’s hardly surprising because there are some big moments which happen. Once again the body count continues to rise and, at this stage, it’s questionable just who’s going to survive this and who won’t. The only thing made clear is that it’s going to be impossible to predict because there are so many different ways this could all play out.

secret empire #7 comic book review

Captain America’s warped dream of a peaceful Hydra-ruled society is falling apart after Madame Hydra’s death. Just outside of Earth’s defensive shield, the trapped Captain Marvel and Alpha Flight weigh up their options and debate about escaping to an alternate universe. Meanwhile, back in Washington DC, Black Widow’s plan to assassinate Captain America continues to move ahead with a new soldier joining the ranks of her team.

However, the vision everyone had of Miles Morales – Spider-Man – killing Captain America clouds everyone’s judgments. As Hydra introduces online censorship and plans to make a forceful statement about their leadership, Black Widow must confront The Punisher as well as destiny itself…

On the down side, the handling of the “vision” of Spider-Man killing Captain America feels a little clumsy. That particular aspect of the story feels almost forced and slightly unfocused. It plays around with fate enough to set things up, but then purposefully goes against it in one of the most questionable moments of the series.

secret empire #7 comic book review

Still, it’s good seeing the Punisher go one-on-one with Black Widow… although there are better moments in this issue. The internet censorship brought up hits home given recent announcements from various countries regarding the cracking down on freedom of speech – another reminder of just how fascism works. The (presumably) Ultimate Captain America storyline continues well, and the reminder that Captain Marvel and Alpha Flight can simply skip realities and go somewhere better is a rather sneaky tease. But once again the concept of hope is pivotal here.

With so many Marvel readers complaining about the direction of the MCU, it’s easy to say that everything should be scrapped and they should just start over. Between dimension-hopping and the Cosmic Cube, it’s easy to do a cosmic reboot if Marvel wants to, in a Rick & Morty way – although fans of that show will know that it’s a patch, not an actual solution. So… what if the current MCU world is really worth saving and fixing? Captain Marvel seems to think it is, and it’s an intriguing thought.

This series has become one that readers either love or hate. If you’re loving it so far, then you’ll love Secret Empire #7. If you hate it, then this won’t do anything to change your mind. Take from that what you want.

Deadpool #34 Review – 100 Percent Bigly Yes

After having (presumably) killed SHIELD’s Agent Coulson, Deadpool has a lot of explaining to do with Agent Preston. His stock has also risen greatly in the ranks of Hydra, and he’s fast becoming their number one guy… except the network of resistance members he’s bringing in to custody are all low-level at best. The latest? The Trapster, formerly known as Paste-Pot Pete. And even that cost Deadpool his costume and some of his dignity.

DEADPOOL #34 review

So what’s really going on? It should be obvious that Deadpool isn’t quite playing by anybody’s rules except his own – and he certainly has no love for Hydra. Agent Preston is someone he knows and trusts, and while their inevitable fight has an explosive conclusion and one of them leaving in a box, it’s clear that Deadpool’s got a plan and that SHIELD’s Maria Hill may not be next on his hit-list…

Deadpool has faced flak from readers since his battle against Coulson, and now we’re seeing the payoff of that particular storyline. With one line of dialogue cut short before the truth can come out, readers are given hints and clues about what’s happening. Some are blatant, in-your-face moments (well, it is Deadpool after all), others are subtle and sneaky. But Deadpool-like sneaky, which means they’re pretty obvious anyway.

For anyone who thought Deadpool #34 would be devoid of laughs, have no fear. There are some great gags layered throughout, although the image of a naked Deadpool with his mask covering his unmentionables seems a bit too juvenile even for him. The same can’t be said for the hilarious signs at the package delivery office, where the jokes are juvenile enough to have you sniggering like a naughty 12-year-old. As for the action, there’s plenty to go around.

DEADPOOL #34 Comic Book review

Any flaws in the writing – and sadly there are a few – are made up for with the art, which flows smoothly and allows for some smart scene transitions with a different style and colouring. Little touches like that may appear to be cosmetic, but it makes a huge impact on the story in general.

Now, in a break from the usual format, something has to be said about the promo for issue 35. It’s funny, and yeah, it’s totally going to be how Secret Empire ends. For sure, 100 percent, bigly yes. Would Deadpool ever lie to us?!

The Relationship of Diabetes to Other Diseases and Conditions

The Relationship of Diabetes to Other Diseases and Conditions

The U.S. diabetes epidemic is more dangerous than most people realize. The Center for Disease Control recently indicated that more than 63% of Americans are at risk for diabetes due to a Body Mass Index (BMI) qualifying them as overweight. Diabetes not only causes other conditions and symptoms, but also is linked with kidney and cardiovascular diseases. To prevent complications, it’s important to understand the relationship between diabetes and other diseases.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes that causes decreased and blurry vision, and eventually blindness. The effect of diabetic retinopathy on vision depends on the stage of the disease. Diabetes’ effect on the retina is a severe threat, mostly seen in elderly sufferers. People with diabetes also tend to experience long-term effects on the circulatory system. As diabetes progresses, the arteries in the retina weaken and form hemorrhages. In later stages of the disease, circulation problems cause areas of the eye to become oxygen-deprived. Consequently, new vessels develop that hemorrhage easily, and blood may leak into the retina as well.

Obesity

Obesity and diabetes are scientifically proven to be directly linked. In fact, obesity is a direct cause of Type II Diabetes. Obesity is dangerous because an excessive proportion of body fat causes elevated blood glucose levels. The human body manufactures insulin after every meal to alert cells that higher levels of glucose are on the way. Type II Diabetes sufferers lack the ability to use this insulin hormone. And when insulin isn’t used properly, the body can’t digest food correctly, hence increasing the risk of additional weight gain, as well as diabetes.

Kidney Disease/Kidney Failure

Diabetes affects many parts of the body. According to the National Kidney Foundation, diabetic kidney disease results from injured small blood vessels in the body. When blood vessels in the kidneys are injured, the kidneys cannot clean the blood properly. At this point, the human body retains more water and salt than it should (which results in weight gain and ankle swelling). In addition, protein appears in the urine and waste materials accumulate in the blood. In addition, Type II Diabetes can cause nerve damage which can result in urination problems. The pressure resulting from a full bladder can back up and injure the kidneys. When urine remains in the bladder for too long, the high levels of sugar can cause the rapid growth of bacteria, resulting in an infection.

Heart Disease & Stroke

The American Diabetes Association says two-thirds of people with Type II Diabetes die from heart disease and stroke. As such, diabetes and heart disease work in tandem – and people with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing heart disease. A person with diabetes has higher than normal blood sugar levels. These high blood sugar levels can damage many parts of the body, including blood vessels. Heart disease is a direct result of narrowed or blocked blood vessels that lead to the heart. Hence, increased blood sugar levels, common with Type II Diabetes sufferers, causes increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Breast Cancer

Scientists have investigated the possible relationship between breast cancer and diabetes and suggested that high levels of insulin increases the risk of breast cancer. Since many factors, such as obesity, increase the risk of both breast cancer and diabetes, it’s been difficult for scientists to determine if diabetes itself is the issue. However, research indicates that women with diabetes have a 20% higher risk of breast cancer than women without diabetes. One recent study suggests that high blood sugar increases the risk of breast cancer, even among pre-menopausal women. In addition, significant weight gain (more than 55 lbs. since age 18, or 22 lbs. after menopause) acts as a catalyst in causing diabetes – and can also increase the risk of breast cancer.

Foot Problems

Of the 16 million Americans with diabetes, more than 25% will develop foot problems due to the disease, according to Foot.com. Diabetic foot problems develop from a combination of factors, including poor circulation and neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy causes an insensitivity to feel pain, heat and cold. As a result, people with diabetes may be unaware they have developed minor cuts, scrapes, blisters or pressure sores. If these minor injuries are left untreated, complications may result, lead to ulceration and possibly even amputation. Foot.com also states that diabetic neuropathy can cause deformities, such as bunions, hammer toes and Charcot feet.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

CTS is another common complication of diabetic neuropathy. Because of the decreased or distorted nerve function, a patient’s ability to feel nerve sensation is lessened. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include numbness, tingling, weakness and burning sensations, usually beginning in the fingers and toes and progressing to the arms and legs. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a 2005 study reported that about 85% of patients with Type I Diabetes develop CTS. Development of CTS was related to the patient’s age, as well as the length of time they had diabetes.

All of the conditions listed above are related to diabetes, and are becoming growing concerns for Americans. Awareness of these associated diseases will hopefully lead to better prevention, such as healthy diet and exercise.

WWE #7 Review – Smart Writing, Fun Plot And Wonderful Artwork

WWE #7 is another example of just how good a WWE comic book can be when it’s done right. The pairing of Dean Ambrose and Sasha Banks is automatically a good one, just because they’re chalk and cheese when it comes to their personalities. Comic book Ambrose is every bit the loose cannon he is on television, deliberately wanting stale doughnuts and happy to make up his plans as he goes along. Likewise, Sasha Banks is no damsel in distress and more than holds her own. Harper and Rowan come across as being even more creepy than their television counterparts, and the introduction of Braun Strowman is intelligently handled. Yet it’s Bray Wyatt who arguably makes the most impact, being the charismatic, terrifying cult leader so often underused in WWE programming.

WWE #7 review

The lunatic fringe known as Dean Ambrose and the self-proclaimed boss Sasha Banks are on a road trip through parts unknown, USA. But a simple pit stop at a diner for coffee and day-old doughnuts turns out to be far more than either of them were counting on. Outside, Dean is attacked by Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, while inside Sasha must face a town full of Wyatt Family followers. Both are kidnapped, but while Ambrose plans his escape in his usual chaotic fashion, Sasha receives an intriguing proposition from Bray Wyatt over dinner.

Meanwhile in the backup feature, Jake “The Snake” Roberts wants to feed Damien, his python. The main course? Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat…

The writing smartly blurs the lines as it should. The backwater setting is intentionally like something out of The Hills Have Eyes, something which is even referred to. It’s every creepy small town from every horror movie. It’s Wyatt Country, the way wrestling fans believe it is, and the whole story could be straight out of a wrestling promo or movie. Wyatt’s mention of the Flair legacy in wrestling and how it opens doors is both true and kayfabe. And for the more seasoned fans, the reference of Wyatt being a husky fellow is a neat callback to the days when he was known as Husky Harris.

WWE 7 REview

With smart writing, a fun plot and wonderful artwork, it’s one of the best all-round comic book stories of the month.

Sadly, the same can’t be said for the backup feature with Jake “The Snake” and Damien. While the main story fills twenty pages and flies by entertainingly, these two pages limp along awkwardly. It’s possible that it’s just the style of artwork which lets it down, but there’s very little story to speak of too. But then, it is only two pages.

On the whole, if you’re a wrestling fan then WWE #7 is definitely worth your time and money. If anything, it may even be better than what’s on TV right now…

Nightwing #26 Review – Dick’s Former Flame Returns

Well, Nightwing‘s love life has certainly been at the centre of his adventures recently. After this relationship with Shawn Tsang has come to an end, Nightwing #26 sees him being visited by a former flame Huntress. The question is, what does she want from him?

Nightwing #26 Review – Dick's Former Flame Returns

In “Spyral” part one, Huntress pops back into Dick Grayson’s life while he is at his lowest point. Shawn dumped him, Brendan “Giz” Li was murdered, and he’s struggling to get back to his “normal” day-to-day life. Initially, it appears as if she’s only there to help him find out who killed his ally, but with Helena, there’s always another motive involved. This time, it’s tied to her and Dick’s past as agents of Spyral.

Subsequently, Shawn struggles with the end of her relationship with Dick in her own way, too. Pigeon tries to convince her to go back to her life of crime, but Shawn refuses. However, after some reflection, the signs point to her going back to her old nefarious ways. Has Dick driven another girl to crime? We’ll have to wait and see.

There’s quite a bit happening in this issue, as Tim Seeley flies right into this new arc. Typical of a spy story, he throws in a whodunit into the mix and keeps us wondering who can be trusted. While Grayson might’ve been a divisive series to fans of Nightwing, it did introduce a lot of questions that still need answering, so this storyline might provide the closure we require.

Nightwing #26 Review – Dick's Former Flame Returns

Seeley also keeps up with his routine of including an absurd amount of action. I don’t think there’s been one Nightwing book that’s lacked a fight scene of sorts, and this issue kicks up a double-whammy as Dick and Helena beat down a couple of baddies in style.

On the pencilling front, Javier Fernandez returns for what feels like the hundredth time to the series. We’re already familiar with his anime-inspired artwork by now, so the art style shouldn’t surprise anyone who has been reading the former Boy Wonder’s Rebirth adventures. Although, I must say that I do miss the art from the “Blockbuster” storyline, which really suited Seeley’s writing as well.

We’re used to quality from Tim Seeley‘s Nightwing, and there’s no letdown here. It’s almost impossible to get bored with this book as it changes things up frequently and explores all facets of Dick’s life. Once again, add this to your buy list for the week.

New Gods Special #1 Review

Jack Kirby was a legend in the field of comic books and rightly deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest of all time. It’s also fitting tribute that his New Gods have been given a special issue to highlight both his own work (the third story of the three) as well as some of his greatest characters. It’s just a shame that it isn’t better.

New Gods Special #1 Review

In the first of three short stories, Forager escapes from the enslaved insect colony under Supertown, which has been conquered by Kalibak who has plans to turn New Genesis into the new Apokalips. Seeking the aid of the New Gods, Forager is joined by Orion and Lightray – and Orion has a score to settle with Kalibak, his half-brother. In the second tale, Orion and Seagrin investigate the monsters Darkseid has been creating below the surface of the Unholy See. In the third tale, Lonar finds his battle horse, Thunderer, and meets with Orion. However, the steed’s reaction to Orion speaks volumes…

While each of the stories on their own is perfectly fine, each is too short to truly do justice to the concept of the New Gods and so the plots are minimal at best. Also, given the array of characters in the New Gods, it’s a poor statement that each story mainly seems focused on Orion. Lightray plays second fiddle in one story, Highfather makes only a brief appearance, and don’t go looking for any Darkseid moments because Kalibak is the best you’ll get.

The writing manages to tell the stories and nothing more, and while the first takes up the most pages, it’s a rather standard tale of Orion’s furious anger being tempered by the philosophy of peace he’s adopted from New Genesis. For long-time readers of New Gods, it’s nothing they haven’t seen before although it still makes him a fascinating character at his core.

New Gods Special #1 Review

However, the artwork is a real saving grace of New Gods Special #1. Shane Davis’s writing may be ordinary here, but his art is fantastic and shows a great eye for detail. The second tale, from the legendary Walter Simonson, packs a visual wallop, while Kirby’s third tale is of the high-quality standard you would expect. Kirby was known by fans as “The King” and for good reason.

Given Kirby’s enormous contributions to the field of comics, it’s great to see the spirit of that being followed through with the other creators of the other two stories doing double-duty as both writer and artist of their tales. While the end result of New Gods Special #1 may be somewhat disappointing due to the lack of space to tell the stories properly, it’s still a worthwhile buy and proof that the memory of Kirby will never be forgotten by fans.

Generations: Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk #1 Review

The concept here is a simple one: which Hulk is the strongest?

Amadeus Cho – the totally awesome Hulk – is mysteriously transported back in time where he encounters the original Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner. There’s no time for a tearful reunion or to ponder the mysteries of time travel though, because the original Hulk is being chased down by General Ross and the full force of the US military. When the two Hulks meet, there’s an instant clash to see which of them is the strongest there is. Yet it’s the contrast of character between Cho and Banner which reveals their true strengths…

Generations Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk #1 Review

Amadeus Cho has proven himself to be a 21st century Hulk in every way. He’s smart, funny and has evolved into a real hero. However, Bruce Banner was – and always will be – the original, and it’s hard to beat the classic. His Hulk went through many changes over the years, but it’s always the tale of being the monster hunted down by a fearful society which epitomized the struggles he went through. Banner himself became the lonely man, making his way across America and the world, living in a state of constant fear of being caught and trying to control the rage within.

This story reminds us of the grim hardships Banner went through for all those years, a fact which astonishes Cho. Cho has been lucky by comparison, and in him Banner sees hope. Yet Banner’s Hulk sees Cho as a fraud, a liar who denies his own inner demons and is a pretender to the crown. The question of who’s the strongest there goes far beyond the physical, and it’s more a matter of who the characters are deep down.

Generations Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk #1 Review

In this regard, Generations: Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk is a great idea. Unfortunately, in execution, it sometimes feels a bit forced. While it’s great to see the classic Hulk smashing away while still being the hero, the plot which is introduced is just padding to get to the heart of the matter – which makes it feel rather pointless. If the two hulks are going to fight, or Cho and Banner are going to have a proper discussion, then at least make it count for something. The story serves its purpose on a psychological level, but it doesn’t offer anything particularly new.

Also, it would have been nice to have been presented with at least one truly memorable image of the Hulk – one of Marvel’s most iconic characters. That isn’t saying the art is bad – far from it, it’s actually gorgeous, one of the best-looking books out there this month – but it doesn’t quite have the impact some fans might want. Still, as Hulk artists go, Matteo Buffagni ranks up with there with the best of them.

So, which Hulk is the strongest? Which is the best? That’s up for readers to decide for themselves. Will Generations: Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk #1 help them make up their minds? Possibly. It’s a good read, even if it isn’t a great one, and if you’ve got the cash to spare it’s worth adding to your collection.

Type 2 Diabetes – Being Overweight As a Child Raises The Risk of Diabetes at Puberty

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, April 2018, overweight children can prevent developing Type 2 diabetes by reducing their weight to a normal healthy weight before they reach puberty.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen and several other research facilities in Copenhagen compared 62,565 Danish men whose height and weight were measured at ages 7, 13, and between 17 and 26 years of age. Links were found between being overweight at the time of each measurement, and measurements at later times were more strongly linked…

  • men who lost their excess weight before 13 years of age had the same chance of developing Type 2 diabetes as men who had never been overweight.
  • men who had been obese at age 7 and again at 13 years of age, had a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than men who had never been overweight.
  • being overweight at age 7 raised the risk of Type 2 diabetes if the excess weight measurement continued into puberty or later age.

Bringing down the weight in an obese child need not always involve lowering their weight because children naturally grow taller, allowing their height to catch up with their weight. Pediatricians can provide charts showing typical growth rates of both height and weight throughout childhood.

With younger children parents can control what food is available, limiting sweets and providing fruit and vegetables for snacks. Making diet and exercise fun can help weight adjustments be less onerous…

  • take a bicycle trip with the whole family to help burn excess fat.
  • make healthful foods that are also fun to eat.

My friend’s mother used to make “snowmen” using a scoop of cottage cheese on the center of a dish. Then she would lay two carrots and two celery down, sticking them out of the cheese for arms and legs. A half peach would make up the head and raisins would become the face.

Another help is to set reasonable goals for weight loss. One to four pounds a month will keep your child from becoming discouraged…

  • a visit to the dietitian will help children learn which foods are helpful for weight loss and which ones are not.
  • a food diary can be an aide to children old enough to read. Compare days as to which foods were eaten to make the diary a learning experience. Why not help your child find pictures to cut out of fruit and vegetables to glue into the diary to make it a little bit more fun.

Zara Clothing For Kids

The clothing company Zara was founded by Amancio Ortega Gaina. He is not only the 8th richest person in the world (according to Forbes), but also the world’s greatest fashion business figure. The company was founded in 1975 in Corunna. Their mother company – Inditex Group (Industrias de Diseco Textil Sociedad Anynima in Spanish) has had little effect on Zara’s unique policies – Zara had always been the innovators, and their owners usually don’t care what Zara does, as long as it’s profitable. Their first store on the main street of Corunna was a great success and the brand expanded to other cities in 1980s, after that to Portugal and in the end – to the UK. Now Zara has shops all over the world, and they are continuing to expand.

The company has reached its highest amounts of sales recently, since its popularity in the fashion world is tremendous. There are more than 1,500 stores in over 70 countries and new ones are opened each year. Zara’s unique clothing and accessories are successfully sold to a diverse variety of costumers, crossing barriers of culture, politics and nations on their way to the customer. The team of a little less than 300 designers is outrunning the whole fashion world in terms of productivity, since it only takes two weeks for them to produce and deliver their new clothing to stores.

There are over 11,000 new clothing pieces produced every year. The company holds the productivity record that beats the adversaries’ companies at least 3 times. The product assortment is changing every month in the UK, so you can visit the store each month and find that everything is new. The company’s newest thing is selling children’s clothing. The stores are called Kiddy’s Class and they can be found in some parts of Europe; and even there the company plans to expand more.

Designing clothes for children is a completely new market. The interest in this new market has increased drastically over the past few years, since there is a tendency among celebrities to dress their children just like themselves. Of course, the ordinary parents want to do the exact same thing and make their children stand out. Zara products are a mixture of traditional and innovative clothing styles – don’t waste your time, try Zara clothing today!.

Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #13 Review

For all its faults, and there are many of them, this isn’t a bad issue of Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey.

Poison Ivy has captured Huntress, Black Canary, the Calculator’s wife and children, and Benedict, the evil corporate boss of Terracare. It’s up to Batgirl, Catwoman, the Calculator and Gus – the new Oracle – to stop her, before she kills Benedict. But what could have caused Poison Ivy to do such a thing, and can the Birds of Prey convince her that violence isn’t the solution? And when the Calculator learns the truth about why his loved ones were kidnapped, what will he do?

Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #13

That doesn’t make Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #13 a good issue, but at least it doesn’t go crashing into the already low bar this series has set for itself. The art helps to keep the story moving at a solid pace, and the writing is… well, the writing is what it is, but at least there’s a bright spot here and there which make it not entirely unbearable. So, by its own really low standards, it’s a win.

If, however, you’re hoping for a top-quality tale then you’re reading the wrong comic book. The plot holes keep getting bigger by the issue, there’s a clear lack of understanding about who the characters are, and there are some gaffes in the art, like a character suddenly having the wrong hair colour. Also, does Poison Ivy have tattoos, or are the spirals on her arms and legs a part of the costume – and if so, why are they there for half the book and then absent from the other half (a difference shown in both covers too)?

Maybe the editorial team have been on vacation and just didn’t notice? Much like they haven’t noticed any of the other problems plaguing this series since its debut. Wow. That must be some vacation they’re on. It’s almost like they don’t care at all.

Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #13 comic book review

Once again, character motivations make little sense and nobody even pretends to care about their secret identities anymore. Poison Ivy gets a whole new set of powers, now being able to control bees… which she seems able to do even before she gets that power. Murderers get away with murder (as long as they’re friends of Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey), while evil Benedict is locked away forever without any questions being asked and everything works out perfectly, in the end, because… why, again? Oh yes. Writing. Bad, bad, bad, bad writing.

The only serious positive this issue gives readers is that the pathetic character of Gus goes away, hopefully, to never return. I’d like to cheer at that because it also means that Barbara Gordon has reclaimed the role of Oracle, but I can’t. This creative team have proven themselves incapable of doing justice to any of these characters, and I’m dreading them ruining the legacy of Oracle even more than Gus already did.

Like I said, this isn’t a bad issue of Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey, especially if you’re after an easy read which doesn’t tax your brain in any way. Just don’t think for a second that this is good. It isn’t.

What Is A Payor Rider For Life Insurance?

Life insurance products can be confusing, but very important when protecting your families future and your personal estate. Attached to each life insurance policy are riders, options, exclusions, provisions and waivers. A rider is a separate document that “rides” or attaches to the main life insurance policy that gives special provisions that provide benefits or make adjustments to the policy.

In most cases with juvenile life insurance policies, a parent or guardian is the policy owner that pays the premium and coverage, while the child is the insured. A payor rider on a policy will cease premium payments of premium if the parent (policy owner) becomes disabled or dies. The payments will become waived by the insurance company until the child has reached a certain age, usually ages 21 or 25.

A payor rider will apply when the payor dies or becomes disabled before the insured has reached an age that is stated in the policy, the insurance policy will still remain in force. This can be applied to death only or death and disability.

The payor rider guarantees the possibility that the juvenile insurance policy will achieve what it’s policy owner wanted it to do, even if the parent/policy owner isn’t there to see it happen. If the parent isn’t able to pay premiums, it still guarantees that the child will have an insurance policy.

This rider does expose the life insurance company to a greater risk, so they must charge higher premiums for the payor rider. The insurance company will manage these risks and pool all their policies together and determine the proper amount to charge to add the rider on. As with any other business, the insurance company is trying to make money. They employ actuaries that complete complex algorithms to arrive at figures which minimize risk, make the company money and while still being competitive in pricing against other insurance companies.

When the policy owner applies for the payor rider, they must prove that they are qualified for the benefit of the rider. This is done in many aspects including medically, morally, and financially. Before the insurer will include a payor rider with the juvenile policy, the policy owner or payor, must provide proof of insurability.

When applying for life insurance policies, make sure that your insurance agent explains all aspects of the policy thoroughly. An applicant will also have a “free look” at all policies, in which it gives the policy owner a time to review the agreement. Many riders can be included to polices that can be beneficial which could be added on for free or have an additional charge.

Nightwing #27 Review – The Name's Dick. Dick Grayson

Geek Girl Vol. 1: Lightning Strikes Review

When college student Ruby Kaye wins a pair of glasses which give her amazing powers during a game of strip poker, she soon finds herself living the life of a superhero. As Geek Girl she’s soon got her hands full battling strange supervillains and realizes that it isn’t as easy as it looks. With her social life falling apart fast and her secret identity already known to too many people, the biggest lesson to be learned is that great power may mean great responsibility and a whole world of problems! Can Geek Girl learn the ropes fast enough to survive her new super powered lifestyle?

Geek Girl vol 1 - Review

There’s an awkward divide which separates real geeks from fake ones. For instance, despite the success of The Big Bang Theory, it’ll never have the same respect from geeks as The IT Crowd. Why? Because for all the clichés which both shows throw out at audiences, TBBT is the wish fulfilment fantasy which the mainstream seems to assume is what real geeks want. They intentionally name-drop comic books for the sake of “geek chic”, but they seem to have so little understanding of them that Sheldon’s classic issue of The Flash #123 is kept in a vault but hasn’t been CGC’d or even been given a backing board in its polybag.

Meanwhile, in The IT Crowd, Moss struggles to perfect an email to the fire department while the office is burning down around him, while Roy repeatedly advises everyone that the best way to fix a computer is to turn it off and on again. They’re obsessive, smart, and “standard nerds” (as the show dubs them) who don’t go out of their way to prove it.

With a title like Geek Girl, it would be easy to have Ruby be exactly what the name suggests. To its credit, she isn’t. She doesn’t name-drop Captain Kirk, quote Star Wars or wear superhero T-shirts to prove just how much of a geek she is… because she really isn’t. She’s one of the cool crowd, who’s fully aware of her status of being sexy. The only thing geeky about her are the glasses she has to wear when she’s a superhero, which makes for a fun inversion of the Clark Kent/Superman routine.

Geek Girl vol 1 - Comic Book Review

In many ways, this series is a throwback to ‘90s titles like Gen-13 and Impact’s The Jaguar, which makes it fun but also suffers some of the drawbacks of those titles. For all the adventure and heroics, there’s also an obsession with eye candy and sexiness, with many of the characters having little depth to them other than stereotypical traits. The guys are morons obsessed with lesbianism (despite being smart enough to create the power-giving glasses), while the young women are focused on looking good, being mean to each other and addressing each other in crude ways which are meant to seem cool.

There’s also little time spent establishing the world they occupy. Clearly, superheroes exist as part of daily life, to the point where nobody seems amazed at all, but it would be interesting learning why. Even getting artificial superpowers seems normal, which makes some of the reactions of the characters come across as too matter-of-fact to be normal.

However, there’s a sense of fun in the writing and, with a little more polish, this series could be a real winner in the near future. The art is impressive too, although the pacing needs to slow down a little in some scenes to allow the story to progress more smoothly.

Geek Girl as a character may be a fake geek but acknowledges that and the honesty is refreshing. As a title, it’s genuine and may just gain a following as a sleeper hit and, certainly, deserves some attention.

Geek Girl vol 1 - Comic Book Review

Geek-Girl: Vol.1: Lightning Strikes! is out Aug 25 and available at www.amazon.com and www.geekgirlcomics.com.

School Homecoming Prom, Dance, and Party Ideas and Themes

Is your student body planning a high school prom, dance, or party? Do you need ideas for your themes? Well look no further we can help spark your creative juices by going over several factors that determine a successful prom.

High School Homecoming

Most High School Homecomings are organized by Student Council Advisors. Now the main idea for a homecoming is to promote school spirit. The planning that goes into a homecoming or party is not as involved as your High School Prom. This does not mean that the decorations should get overlooked at your schools homecoming. We will discuss those ideas later.

High School Prom

At a majority of High Schools, their Proms are planned by the Junior Class Prom Committee. The prom is the send off for the school’s upper class students. There can be two separate proms depending on the size of your junior and senior class. Some schools in different districts go as far as to combine proms due to smaller class sizes. Since the High School Prom is a formal event, it is usually receives more attention and funding.

High School Homecoming Dance Ideas

So you and your committee are looking for ideas for your homecoming, dance, or party. Your themes depend mostly on the traditions of your school. Try to tie in what your school mascot. If your party or dance is something more casual, then it may be predetermined. The basic ingredients for successful school homecoming dance are music, hype, and energy. The company you hire for the Michigan DJ can make or break your ticket sales for the next dance depending on how the music was balanced. How well your committee hypes the party will determine the outcome as well. Do not forget that the energy level at your school homecoming dance will be based on how much decorating your group does.

High School Prom Themes

Your High School Prom theme deserves more attention than the typical High School Homecoming. This means spending more time selecting a reputable venue location, caterer, photographer, and Michigan DJ Company. Here is a list of High School Prom themes for you to choose from.

The Ultimate Dance for your Students

Selecting a theme and going over ideas will help guarantee a fun and memorable event. This is a key component in producing an unforgettable prom or homecoming dance. First, think about the type of prom you want to have, whether you want it to be romantic, fun, or mysterious. Most schools develop themes that generally set the guidelines for the prom colors and decorations. Some schools have become more creative by revolving the entire dance party around the theme and ideas. This goes all the way down to the students costume attire to decorations. Whatever theme your committee chooses, make sure it fits the personality and customs of your student body.

Bill & Ted Save The Universe #3 Review

Bill & Ted Save The Universe bounces back with an entertaining, quirky issue which also hits many of the right emotional notes at all the right times.

The Wyld Stallyns – Bill S. Preston, esquire, and his most excellent friend “Ted” Theodore Logan – successfully overcome the trial of whether they’re culturally relevant with flying colours, thanks to their good friend Rufus and an impromptu jam session. However, their future legacy of bringing peace and harmony to the universe doesn’t extend as far as their own families. Their parents can’t stop arguing about what bad jobs each other did as parents, while Ted’s brother Deacon becomes further alienated by the success of the band. As for Bill and Ted themselves, a difference in opinion over the band’s future may jeopardise the fate of the universe itself…

Bill & Ted Save The Universe #3

While there’s some initial silliness, it’s still perfectly in keeping with the classic Bill & Ted style so it’s easy to just go along with it – especially since Rufus acquits himself after being made to look like a complete tool in the last issue. The family dynamic works a lot better this time around too, and while (to quote Doctor Who) we don’t do domestics it makes sense for Rufus to hand out blame equally.

The real highlight, astonishingly, comes from Deacon’s story. It’s understandable and tragic, and he’s come a long way over the years since Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Often overlooked since then, it’s obvious that he has a key role to play and his story is far from over, and it’ll be interesting seeing where it leads.

As for Bill and Ted themselves, they’re back in excellent form. While the argument about their cultural relevance breaks the fourth wall and is resolved in a way Monty Python would have appreciated, the bigger issue about the band’s future comes back in to play. While Bill and Ted debate the pros and cons, Ted emotional outpouring is almost poetic and its touches like this which make them clearly different and not interchangeable. Both believe they’re doing the right thing, but have different outlooks on life and it’s fascinating to see that being played out.

Bill & Ted Save The Universe #3

If there’s any flaw here, it’s that the initial concept of whether the Wyld Stallyns’ music is actually against the evolutionary process of the universe is overlooked again. Still, hopefully it’ll return soon.

The writing here offers up dumb fun, a sly intelligence and a whole lot of heart. Matching that wonderfully is the art, which balances the cartoon-like nature with some well-timed restraint during the more personal scenes.

In short, as issues go, Bill & Ted Save The Universe #3 truly is excellent.

Manhunter Oversize Special #1 Review

If you can only buy one of the Jack Kirby tribute comics from DC this year, Manhunter Oversize Special #1 is the one.

Paul Kirk – the Manhunter – battles against the criminal underworld in Empire City. His war on crime is a brutal one, but life as a hunter of animals has prepared him for the most dangerous prey on Earth: man itself. His actions have not gone unnoticed, however, and while on his latest mission he’s confronted by Sandman and his sidekick Sandy, the Golden Boy – who want to teach him that there’s a difference between violence and true justice. In the second featured story, Jason Blood hopes that an exorcism will cast Etrigan the Demon out of his body. And Jack Kirby’s classic feature tells of a woman whose face is always bandaged whenever she goes out in public… but what terrifying secret is she hiding?

Manhunter Oversize Special #1

Manhunter has become one of the truly forgotten characters of the Golden Age of comic books, and it’s great seeing him in action once again. He’s the sort of no-nonsense hard-ass who makes Batman look like a wimp, as he bludgeons mobsters, insults sidekicks and complains about his underwhelming rogues gallery of enemies. When Sandman and Sandy the Golden Boy show up, you’ve got the obligatory fight between them. Except it’s more like the legendary alleyway fight between “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Keith David in They Live.

Unsurprisingly, when seen through our modern eyes Manhunter is a politically incorrect thug. He revels in brute force and boasts about being a hunter of animals (albeit in a “noble” fashion), PETA and Greenpeace be damned. By today’s standards, it sounds appalling; but he can’t, and shouldn’t, be judged by today’s standards. He’s fascinating and heroic, like a costumed adventurer out of the old movie serials, and the confrontation between two differently-styled heroic vigilantes is an instant classic. The writing is smart and quick-witted, while the art does a masterful job in replicating much of Kirby’s style and use of negative space.

Manhunter Oversize Special #1

The Demon story is quick, simple and packs quite a wallop too. Etrigan and his host, Jason Blood, can be hard to flesh out but the basic premise of their dual existence being tiresome for both is handled well. Some more pages of story would have done it even more justice, but as a backup feature it more than does the job.

As for Kirby’s contributions, one is a rather neat mystery which would have worked as a Twilight Zone episode as it juggles a modern romantic thriller with a supernatural gothic horror. Sadly, his art in this one isn’t the best example of his legendary talent, but the story holds up well. His short features about what the real-world future holds in store is both nostalgic pulp and in many ways prescient but, at its heart, it’s fun to look back at that time with a sense of wide-eyed wonderment.

This may not be the special everyone would want, but if you’re looking for an all-round entertaining read which truly honours The King, then Manhunter Oversize Special #1 is it.

Secret Empire #9 Review – If You Want Change, Here It Is

If issue #8 was about heroism and hope returning with a flourish to the Marvel Universe, then Secret Empire #9 is about returning its sense of fun.

It’s the beginning of the end for the corrupted Captain America’s Hydra empire and the assembled forces who oppose him. With the Darkforce and Earth’s defensive shield removed, the trapped heroes have finally been released, uniting with the resistance to end Hyrda’s control of the USA. As the battle grows more desperate for both sides, old alliances will crumble and new ones will be formed. But even with the return of the Winter Soldier, can the heroes do enough to stop Arnim Zola and Steve Rogers’ ultimate plan now that they possess almost every piece of the Cosmic Cube?

Secret Empire #9 Comic Book Review

It may sound like a strange thing for them to focus on, especially after the grim plot twists of recent issues and the fact that they’re fighting a war. After all, they’re fighting not just for the fate of the world but for its very soul. However, this is exactly what’s needed at this time in the story and it’s proof of why all of the nay-sayers and doubters of this series who have demanded change should have given it a chance. Yes, it’s been a rough ride full of distasteful moments, but it’s also the best way to right the wrongs from the past several years. If you want change, here it is.

For the first time in what feels like a lifetime, the assembled might of the MU gather together for a common goal… and damn, it’s a good old-fashioned adventure. The characters get to enjoy themselves as they crack skulls and take names, just like they used to in the good old days. Seeing the mercenaries who have sided with Hydra not only discuss their lousy salaries, but then switch sides, may almost seem too light-hearted but it’s still a great routine.

This issue isn’t all about the comedy though. Far from it. It’s also a much-needed apology to many fans about how dark Marvel has gotten, and how they’ve taken too many wrong paths over the years in terms of storytelling. When the heroes spend more time fighting with each other than the latest long-underwear megalomaniacal villain, it’s a problem. Much like DC’s Rebirth, it’s a sign of good faith on their part that what made Marvel so special for so many years will return.

Secret Empire #9 Comic Book Review

There’s action and adventure, and for once all the cameos by countless characters in the blow-out fight scene doesn’t appear too chaotic or forced. The art may not entirely do justice to Secret Empire #9‘s writing, but even then that’s a minor criticism.

So what’s the future of the Marvel Universe looking like at this point? If it keeps going in this direction, it could be very bright indeed.

WWE #8 Review – It Cashes In But Comes Up Short

Sadly WWE #8 doesn’t quite live up to the high expectations created by the last issue. While there are some great little moments in it – especially the hug-life hero Bayley making a wonderful, hilarious appearance – the main story itself breaks the suspension of disbelief quickly, and from that point onward it doesn’t quite work.

WWE #8

Dean Ambrose, the Lunatic Fringe himself, is on the run with Sasha Banks in their makeshift monster truck. Behind them in this Mad Max-style chase is the Wyatt Family, who demand vengeance after Sasha Banks refused to join their cult. However, the mayhem takes an even wilder turn when Charlotte Flair and Dana Brooke join the chase. What will this mean for Dean, who has a Money In The Bank ladder match later that night? Meanwhile, in the backup feature, the legendary Undertaker focuses on preparing for his match with the Ugandan giant, Kamala. But could it Paul Bearer and his secrets which will bring about the Undertaker’s true downfall?

While WWE #7 did a great job in establishing a horror movie tale, this attempt at Mad Max comes across more like Wacky Racers. The laws of physics get tossed out the window, and there’s never a real feeling of urgency or danger.

The appearance of Charlotte comes out of nowhere and serves little purpose, while Dean’s confrontation with Brock Lesnar seems almost like a tacked-on couple of pages to drag the story out. Beyond the writing, even the art (usually so crisp and a joy to behold) drops in quality at times as it occasionally seems unfocused or rushed. It’s possible, and indeed likely, that trying to make a car chase in comic books work is always going to be a struggle for any artist because of the medium of stationary panels. Unfortunately, even considering that, this issue is a bit of a let-down.

WWE #8 Review

The backup feature with the Undertaker and Paul Bearer is short and to the point. Granted, unless you know your wrestling history, you just won’t get it. Still, for those who do it’s a bit of a rare treat as readers are given a glimpse in to the mindset of Bearer, and not his phenom.

This series has constantly proven to be a surprise, as it blurs the lines between wrestling storylines and reality in some incredibly creative ways. Unfortunately though, WWE #8 is a drop in quality. Like another recent Money In The Bank contract holder, it cashes in… but comes up short.

Batman Ninja Review – Visually Stunning, But The Story Isn’t For Everyone

Batman NinjaLately, DC’s animated output has been a mixed bag but you’ve got to admire that they’re thinking outside the box. For real comic book fans there’s been the likes of the outstanding Justice League Dark. For those keen on nostalgia, there’s been the Batman ’66 films. For those wanting something a little different, there was the Elseworlds tale of Gotham By Gaslight. Yet there’s been nothing quite like Batman Ninja… and that’s not necessarily a good thing. When Gorilla Grodd […]

The Nose Often Knows

Rhinoplasty is a long-standing, popular surgical procedure; it involves reshaping the nose in some way. Even slight modifications to this high-profile feature can make a tremendous difference in appearance.

Each nose job operation is customized to the individual; therefore, factors such as anesthesia type, recuperation time, and cost will vary. Closed rhinoplasty surgery involves very small incisions made on the inside of the nose. Open rhinoplasty surgery includes tiny inside incisions but also incorporates an outside cut. Thankfully, external scars often fade to almost invisible levels.

Let’s look at some common nose imperfections people want to correct.

  • Bumps. Some individuals have sizable bumps and removal of the protrusion can dramatically bring about refinement. Undoubtedly, a full facial appearance becomes impressively enhanced, but the profile sometimes realizes even greater visual rewards.
  • Excessive width. Certain people have considerably wide noses and wish to narrow the measurement. A skilled plastic surgeon can slim the width and allow the face to seem more balanced.
  • Excessive narrowness. Significantly wide noses sometimes detract from an otherwise eye-catching face, but extremely narrow noses can do the same. In this circumstance, a trained doctor increases the width of the nose to attain better harmony.
  • Largeness or droopiness. A nose that hangs down or is exceedingly large tends to steal the show, but typically not in a good way. Lifting and/or minimizing the length and/or width can make a huge difference in how an individual looks and feels.
  • Crooked or twisted. Correcting a nose that lacks symmetry takes skill and expertise. Depending on the degree of shifting, it may even be difficult for a highly-trained surgeon to attain precise proportions. Nevertheless, qualified hands can craft vast improvements in the deformity.
  • Minor imperfections. Some people need only slight changes to achieve satisfaction. For example, the removal of a small bump or slight nostril tweaking can produce gratifying results for certain individuals. An added perk? Few people will even know any work was done.

Naturally, there are other reasons why people seek out rhinoplasty besides the ones listed above. For example, some individuals suffer from nasal fractures, and others are displeased with the outcome of a prior nose job and want a revision. When rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic purposes, insurance companies usually do not pay. However, if breathing is affected because of a structural abnormality (e.g., deviated septum), then insurance may cover the cost. Other procedures, such as a chin implant, may also be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty; this tends to beautify the face in people with receding chins.

Rhinoplasty can make a tremendous difference in appearance. Nonetheless, the preparation and skill level of the physician often determines if the changes are positive.
